Spent time with spent grain- homemade dog treats

My friends Sam and Catherine are preparing to open up Sisyphus Brewing late May/June. Sam recently brewed up an English IPA and gave me a baggie of spent grain to try out some recipes for homemade dog treats. What's spent grain you ask? Let me tell you... "Spent grain, the leftover malt and adjuncts after the mash has extracted most of the sugars, proteins, and nutrients, can constitute as much as 85 percent of a brewery’s total by-product. Craft breweries all over the country have devised innovative ways to prevent their spent grain from going to waste."- Craftbeer.com

If you are home brewer you want to make sure to use the spent gain within 18-24 hours of when it was brewed. Keep it refrigerated in a ziplock bag, to avoid mold. I decided to make these treats with gluten free flour to its a little easier on the dogs stomach, even though the spent grain is not gluten free. These dogs always deserve something special, and this time it was peanut butter and banana treats. Read more below for the recipe.

Everything you need to make these little treats

2 cups spent grain

1/2 cup brown rice flour, 3 tbsp potato starch, 1 tsp tapioca flour, 1/2 tsp xantham  gum = all purpose gluten free flour

Add egg and mix all together by hand.

Ingredients Needed :

  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 banana
  • 2 cups spent grain
  • 1 cup flour of your choice ( I made some all purpose gluten free flour. 1/2 cup brown rice flour, 3 tbsp potato starch, 1 tsp tapioca flour, 1/4 tsp xanthum gum)
  • cookie cutters

Preheat oven to 350

Mix spent grain, egg, flour, peanut butter and one smooshed banana. I used my hand to mix it all together.

Flour your counter top and rolling pin and roll out the mixture to about 1/4-1/2 thickness on the counter top.

Cut out your shapes, I used 2" squares, circles and triangles from my jewelry making cutters.

Place on baking tray and put in the oven for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes turn the heat in the oven to 225 degrees  for 3 hours. This will help make sure they are 100% dried out and no chance of mold on the cookies.

Let cool off and feed to your pups. And the best part is they are safe for human consumption and you know all the ingredients so you know that it is great for your little fur baby. :)
